The aim of the Ramsar Convention is to protect wetlands as valuable habitats and promote a balanced use of such areas. In 1983 the Lake Neusiedl region was earmarked as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention. The Haus am Kellerplatz is its official visitor centre.
Upstairs, temporary exhibitions are dedicated to the plants and animals in the conservation area around Lake Neusiedl, some of which are very rare. The first exhibition, entitled Liebe im Schilf, explains to visitors the reproduction strategies of reed bed inhabitants.
The diverse landscape components of this World Heritage Site and plants from the shores of the lake can be viewed on the building's wooden terrace. This is also the meeting point for numerous excursions to the most beautiful and most interesting sites between the Leitha Mountains and Lake Neusiedl.
